Future Control of Food
Am getting there.. After a two long months of gap i finally sat down to type my views. My angry over the other side of the world is still with me even after changing places. I feel that to be a good thing. Ok, now coming to the point. I was actually asking my friends to suggest topics to write down. Friend of mine, Sankari, suggested a topic on Junk Food consumption
How food is controlled?
What exactly compromises food? Right from plants, flowers, micro-organisms, domestic animals - every organic stuff thats been consumed will come under food.
As per the Indian constitution Act, Right to Food is one of the basic rights that all of the citizen must exercise. None of the countries in this world is self-sufficient. Everyone has to depend upon trade. Trade policies and international agreements must be written in such a way that it must provide food to all. All the international bodies are saying so. Obviously its not true.
There are 195 countries in this world.
Total population of the world is 6.77 Billion.
850 million people are suffering from Undernourishment.
2 Billion people got hit by Malnutrition.
Contradictory part is 1 Billion have a problem of over weight. (300 million have Obesity issue).
How does this imbalance happenning? Any kid will answer that, the distribution of food is not fair. Above facts can be verified here.
Leaving the usual reasons of political and economical gains for the above problem, lets dwelve deep into the hidden industry of IP.
Intellectual Property (IP) Rights are similar to Copyrights and patent stuff. Only difference being any work of art (creation) inclusive of commercial can be patented. Simply put, granting ownership for the creative work of mind, and thereby totally enjoying a monopoly over the benefits. What a digital licensing is for media, IP is for intangible assets. The process of farming is a tedious one as everyone must be aware of. What this got to do with food?
Seed production is a general process which is carried out by farmers. The entry point for the corporate is this. They had taken over this by citing the very reason of producing hybrid, special seeds. Lots of R&D happened and were happening to promote hybrid quality of plants. These hybrid seeds are marketed on the basis of improving the food that is produced. Not only that, they are capable of disease resistance, pest resistance, drought tolerance (!), improved consumption etc.
Simply put this is referred to as Privatization or patenting of Agriculture Innovation.
Agriculture has reached a new level. It lot depends upon technology. Equipments, fertilizers, pesticides are all gaining from agro-business. Small scale agriculturists with mariginal lands are under a threat of losing business if they didnt cope up with modern technology. Such a scenario had been imposed upon. Breeders under the mask of corporates are eating up the profits of farmers.
Regardless of the multiple conventions , enormous civil bodies, international agreements the level of the farmer had never been an uprising one. Plant Breeder's rights (PBR) seems to be holding the things in control, but not necessarily. These organisations start from WTO.
Irrespective of the civil bodies introduced to help for the uprising of the farmer's status, they are simply eating them up. The trade negotiations and agreements which are framed by the WTO and WHO are playing a little part from their side, if at all.
Control of food is very little as of now. Its taking its time for the big game. If you want to realise this fact, think how much you spend for the Junk food in your life. Junk food seems to be the first step in the whole agenda. The reasoning behind this is: make people consume the same stuff and with the same taste, then that will make them addictive to it. Give it a little thought. How food become a branded one? What is the next step? Making the ingredients as branded stuff. How that can be achieved? Through patents, breeders rights, IP etc.
This blog is not an comprehenive one. As i had collected lots of fact related to this, its too much to expect you to make study it all. So please wait for the next blog.
